Zulzi: From humble starts to national app of choice

JOHANNESBURG – THE village of Ntshuxi outside Giyani in the Limpopo Province may not be renowned as the home of tech start-ups.

However, it is this remote outpost that produced the founder of a company that is making waves in the app-based business world.

Formed in 2014 as an e-commerce company selling textbooks and electronic equipment to university students online, Vutlharhi Valoyi’s offering,
Zulzi, has transformed into an on-demand delivery service app that brings groceries to the doors of thousands of households in a number of suburbs in the north of Johannesburg.

It already has in excess of 9 000 active registered users. Further, the company has delivered over 15 000 orders since the company was started in 2016.

Looking ahead, the self-confessed computer geek says he plans to expand Zulzi to other metropolitan areas, including Durban, Pretoria and Cape

Zulzi can be traced to the three years Valoyi spent at the University of the Witwatersrand studying a BSc in Applied Mathematics.

He later worked for a software company in Cape Town before relocating to Johannesburg where he worked for a number of companies in the information and communications technology sector.

Four years ago, Zulzi was formed as an e-commerce company selling textbooks and electronic equipment to university students online.

“Our turnaround time for delivery was 24 hours,” he says.

In the second year of operation, they identified a gap in the market to provide a speedier service and reduced the delivery time to just 60 minutes.

“The response to this was phenomenal! We immediately saw a 30 percent spike in demand for our services and a significant increase in market share,” says Valoyi.

To sign up for the service, prospective customers need to download the app, either on Android or iOS. Zulzi works at such supermarkets as Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths, Dis-Chem, Riverside Liquors and Pick ‘n Pay Liquor, in addition to a number of restaurants and fast food outlets.

Among other awards, Zulzi took first place in the Best Breakthrough Developer category of the recent prestigious MTN Business App of the Year Awards, voted for by the public.

In addition, Zulzi took first place in the People’s Choice.

Mandisa Ntloko, General Manager for Enterprise Marketing: MTN Business SA, says by introducing the People’s Choice Award, MTN Business gave the public a voice and an opportunity to be part of the adjudication process.

“Through this category, MTN Business has demonstrated that it truly values the participation and feedback of the public,” Ntloko says.

Valoyi offers advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs .

“Keep abreast of technological developments that are taking place internationally and learn as much as possible about the field you wish to get into,” he advises.
