Utility Week awards celebrate African excellence

CAPE TOWN – AFRICA’S pioneering utilities, projects and
individuals in the energy and water sector will be honoured on Wednesday evening at the African Utility Week Industry Awards in Cape Town.

The fifth annual awards received nominations from far and wide for the 12 different categories celebrating excellence in the energy and water industries.

This year, two new categories were added, namely excellence in energy or water journalism as well as digitally advanced utilities.

Prominent accolades will include the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Siengui Apollinaire KI (Secretary General, Western African PowerPool, Burkina Faso), Alex Gisagara (Director of Engineering, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Uganda), Irene Muloni (Minister for Energy and Minerals, Uganda), Roland Schulze (Professor Emeritus of Hydrology Centre for Water Resources Research School of Agricultural, Earth and  Environmental Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) and Elijah Sichone, the Executive Secretary, Regional Electricity Regulators Association of Southern Africa (RERA), based in Namibia, are nominated.

Power Utility of the Year Award features Compagnie Ivoirienne
D’Electricite (Ivory Coast), Société Nationale d’électricité du Burkina
Faso, Electriçidade De Moçambique, and Public Utilities Corporation of Seychelles.

Office National de l’Eau et de l’Assainissement (Burkina Faso), National Water and Sewerage Corporation (Uganda) and Sénégalaise des Eaux are nominated for the Water Utility of the Year Award.

The awards have received major industry support in the form of
sponsorships from Aberdare Cables, Eaton, ESI Africa, Lucy Electric,
Mazars, SBS Tanks, Standard Bank and Steinmüller.

The awards are among the major highlights of the 18th annual African Utility Week, gathering over 7 000 decision makers from more than 80 countries to discuss the challenges, solutions and successes in the power, energy and water sectors on the continent.
